Bosche – irreligious detective?

I haven’t seen this, because I haven’t turned on a TV since the turn of the century, but according to this ad that keeps popping up on every video I try to watch, we have a new leading good guy portrayed as an atheist.  That’s good, I guess.  It doesn’t happen very often.  I guess Hugh Laurie’s House M.D. must have done pretty well if they’re doing Bosch P.D. now.

  1. Have read the books which I really like and the show looks OK.

Cop trying to do a good job and is messed with by the bosses and rules.

Magnum force without the magnum and better thought processes and more realistic problems when breaking the rules.

So far I like it….will see how it goes.

  2. House and Hugh Laurie will be hard to top. but we’ll give it a spin….we need more people of reason on tv and in the public eye. BTW i collect lossless live recordings and i have a few from Hugh Laurie, an accomplished jazz and blues musician…. look him up if you like the genera .

  3. Has anybody actually seen this yet? I’m a big fan of the Connelly books. Although after a search on it just now I see mention of Bosch being 47 years old. The first several books really leaned on his experience as a tunnel rat in the Vietnam war. Guess they are going to have to throw all of that out.

And look at the crossover material. Clint Eastwood worked with Bosch in the Blood Work books/movie. And Matthew McConaughey’s Lincoln Lawyer is Bosch’s half brother.

That’s a really simple rewrite. We’ve had plenty of wars since Vietnam. I’ve seen several other book-to-movie/TV conversions that simply moved the Vietnam stuff to the first Gulf War, with only minor changes necessary.

Failing that, we’ve had so much dodgy stuff going on around the globe, for the past 12 or 13 years, you could easily change it to some sort of special forces service, with no real narrative change.

  4. Bosch spoke about “Blue Religion” in an episode by that name. The lines went like this:

Harry: I have my own kind of faith. Blue religion. Arthur Delacroix’s bones came out of the ground for a reason. They came out of the ground for me to find them so I can put some part of this right. Thanks,

    Doc. You’re welcome, Harry.

It’s not a god-based sense of purpose. Bosch seems to have a minimalist “spiritual” outlook. Practically atheist, but caught up in goal directed rhetoric.

    1. nothing hardcore like eastwood telling hoffman in “gran torino” that “religion was for old ladies”?

we need more like that…. like house telling all that “if we could talk reason to religious folks there would be no religious folks.”

  5. Atheist detectives are only a recent phenomenon on US TV. British TV series and novels have long been populated with characters who are dismissive or derisive of religion – Holmes, Poirot, Marple, Morse, Dalziel and Pascoe, and many others. Unfortunately they don’t get much airplay stateside other than PBS and A&E, if they still show them.

    1. You seem to be under the horribly mistaken impression that there are more than 2 or 3 writers in Hollywood who aren’t complete hacks. 😀
